Responding to Homelessness in Further and Higher Education - A Toolkit
A new guide to help universities and colleges support students and staff who are facing or at risk of homelessness
An estimated 1 in every 13 students in the UK has experienced homelessness. Support from university can be life-changing, but it’s not always considered. Students (and staff) can experience homelessness as a result of a number of factors including unaffordable housing, the lack of anywhere to stay during holidays, losing benefits and more.
So we brought together academics, people with lived experience and university staff through our University Peer Network on Homelessness to join forces and co-create Responding to Homelessness in Further and Higher Education – A Toolkit (click the orange text to download the toolkit).
The toolkit includes information, advice and case studies to help universities, further and higher education institutions support students and staff who are facing or at risk of homelessness. It includes sections on creating more debate around homelessness, campaigning and providing clear pathways to points of contact who can help (click on our Downloadable Homelessness ‘Here to Help’ poster which can be printed and used in student unions, foyers of departments etc – you can see the poster on the bottom of this page).
We are immensely grateful to the many universities, colleges and students who helped co-create this guide over the course of a year, especially Professor Nadine Holdsworth at University of Warwick who supported the design of the toolkit and LSE who hosted the launch. We are also grateful for the support of our funders Arts Council England and Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
